Quick read: A plain-English suburb guide for Irish newcomers comparing beach life, nightlife, transport, rent and community links north and south of the Swan River.
North of the river
- North of the river suits people who want beaches, Scarborough nights, Joondalup access, northern suburbs house shares and a strong Irish pub and sport scene.
- Popular areas for new arrivals often include Leederville, Mount Lawley, Scarborough, Innaloo, Subiaco, Joondalup and surrounding suburbs.
- The trade-off can be higher demand near the coast and longer commutes if your work is south or east of the city.
South of the river
- South of the river can suit people working in Fremantle, Canning Vale, Welshpool, Armadale, Cockburn or Mandurah corridors.
- Areas like Victoria Park, East Victoria Park, South Perth, Fremantle, Como and Applecross can be great for food, pubs and transport.
- You may get better value further from the river or coast, but check transport carefully if you will not have a car.
How to choose
- Put your workplace, gym or GAA club on a map before choosing a room.
- Check late-night transport if you plan to work hospitality or go out in the city.
- Visit the suburb during the day and evening. A place can feel very different after work hours.
The best suburb is the one that fits your work, budget and people. Perth is spread out, so commute time matters.
