Before you leave Ireland

  • Check your visa grant notice and passport dates, save copies offline, and keep a printed copy in your hand luggage.
  • Book short-term accommodation for at least your first week so you are not rushing into a room before you have seen it.
  • Bring digital and paper copies of references, qualifications, driver licence, prescriptions and insurance details.

Your first week in Perth

  • Sort a phone plan, bank account and Tax File Number. You can apply for a TFN through the Australian Taxation Office once you are in Australia.
  • Get a SmartRider for Transperth buses and trains if you will be using public transport.
  • Start a simple suburb shortlist based on work location, beaches, public transport and where your friends or sports clubs are.

Settling in properly

  • Register with a GP or understand how your private health cover works.
  • Join a few local groups before you need them: Irish sport, social meetups, suburb pages and job groups.
  • Do not leave paperwork until the last minute. Licences, AHPRA, trade recognition and police checks can take time.
