Quick read: A focused guide for Irish electricians moving to Perth, covering WA licensing, TRA assessment, supervised work, gap training, White Card and when TA work may be the better short-term option.
Can Irish electricians work straight away?
- Usually not unsupervised. Electrical work in WA is regulated, especially fixed wiring, installation work, sign-off and contracting.
- If you are coming from Ireland, check the WA pathway before accepting electrical work. Being a qualified electrician at home is not the same as holding a WA electrical licence.
- A job offer does not remove the licence, permit or supervision requirements that may apply.
Full WA electrician licence pathway
- For international applicants, WA says the pathway generally starts with Trades Recognition Australia assessing your overseas trade skills and issuing an Offshore Technical Skills Record (OTSR) or Technical Skill Assessment Record (TSAR) endorsed Electrician (General).
- You then apply for an Electrical Workers Permit. This allows you to work under supervision while completing the required Australian context gap training.
- The pathway includes supervised employment for a minimum period of 12 months and completion of gap training, such as Australian Minimum Context Gap Training or Electrical Trades Licensing Gap Training.
- Once those steps are complete, you can apply for a full electrical licence. WA says licence applications typically take 6-8 weeks to process after submission.
Documents and costs to expect
- You may need trade evidence, apprenticeship records, certificates, employer references, an OTSR or TSAR, proof of identification and a recent police check.
- There can be costs for assessment, police checks, permit applications, gap training and licence applications. Check current fees before committing.
- If you are still in Ireland, gather detailed records before leaving. It is much harder to chase old paperwork from Perth.
When TA work may be smarter
- If your visa is short, your plans are uncertain or you mainly want site experience, TA work may be more cost effective than the full licence pathway.
- A TA role can help you get started on site, but it should not involve regulated electrical work unless you are properly licensed or permitted and supervised under the WA rules.
- Before paying for training or assessments, compare the total cost and time with how long you plan to stay in Australia.
White Card and site tickets
- For construction sites, you generally need a WA White Card. Read the White Card vs Safe Pass guide if you are used to Irish construction requirements.
- Depending on the job, employers may also ask for working at heights, EWP, confined space, high-risk work licences, medicals or drug and alcohol screening.
- Do not buy every ticket first. Start with the role you want, then work backwards from real employer requirements.
