Quick read: Rental scams can hit hardest before you have landed. Here is how to spot fake rooms, fake landlords and pressure tactics.

Why new arrivals are targeted

  • People moving from Ireland often need a room quickly and may not know suburbs, rents or tenancy rules yet.
  • Scammers use urgency: “lots of people interested”, “pay now to hold it”, or “I am overseas but can send keys”.
  • They may copy real photos from old listings and offer rent below the market.

Checks to make

  • Reverse-search photos if something feels off.
  • Ask for a live video viewing and proof that the person can access the property.
  • Search the address and compare the listing with real estate sites.

Before paying

  • Avoid large payments before viewing or verifying the person.
  • Get the agreement in writing, including rent, bond, bills, room, move-in date and notice period.
  • Use official information from WA Consumer Protection if you are unsure about bond or tenancy rules.

A genuine landlord or housemate should be able to answer normal questions clearly.
